2024 in Review: My Top 10 Photography Highlights
Discover the highlights of my 2024 photography journey, including lessons learned, creative breakthroughs, and my top 10 favorite shots that define the year.
1. The Joy of Creation
This year, I’ve realized more than ever that the joy of creating photographs is the most important part of my journey. While I’ve achieved certain milestones and encountered challenges—some of which I’ve only partially overcome—what matters most is that my passion for photography has never been stronger.
After all, what’s the point of success if you lose the joy of the craft? For me, the act of photographing—the process itself—is what fuels my creative spirit. It’s this joy that keeps me moving forward, even when technical goals or external recognition might take a back seat.
2. Lens Chronicles
Starting my newsletter, Lens Chronicles, has been one of the standout moments of this year. I still vividly recall the excitement of publishing my first post, eagerly anticipating how it would resonate with readers. Today, I’m proud to say I’ve grown to 169 subscribers. While none are paid yet, the feedback I’ve received has been profoundly rewarding. Knowing that my photos and words can brighten someone’s day or spark reflection strengthens my passion and deepens my commitment to photography.
3. Medium Stories
This year, eleven of my Medium stories were "boosted," with seven focused exclusively on photography. While my Medium stats haven’t shown significant growth, the fact that these stories were selected by editors and reached wider audiences reassures me that my work has value. It’s a small but meaningful reminder that someone out there appreciates what I do. These moments of recognition motivate me to keep developing as both a photographer and a writer.
4. Mentorship and Guidance
My collaboration with my photography mentor continues to be one of the most valuable aspects of my journey. Meeting twice a month on average, I’ve received guidance that has fundamentally shaped the way I approach my work.
If I had to name the single most important influence on my growth as a photographer, it would undoubtedly be my mentor. Their insights and constructive feedback have not only helped me improve technically but have also encouraged me to explore new ideas and push my creative boundaries.
5. Style and Experimentation
Despite the progress I’ve made, I still feel like I’m in the “honeymoon” or “Tinder” phase of photography—constantly exploring different genres and subjects. Street photography was my first love, but over time, I’ve been increasingly drawn to abstract photography. There’s something liberating about finding beauty in the unconventional, discovering shapes, textures, and moments that might otherwise go unnoticed.
One thing I hope to achieve in the future is a sharper focus on a specific genre. While I enjoy experimenting, I recognize that committing to a particular style or theme could allow me to deepen my skills and storytelling.
6. Inspiration Through Monographs
This year, I started a new habit: studying the works of renowned photographers through their monographs. Before I go out to shoot or edit, I immerse myself in images from the genre I plan to explore. This practice has been a game-changer for my inspiration. It sharpens my eye and helps me approach my work with a clearer vision.
7. Intention and Series
One area I hope to develop is defining my photographic intent. Right now, my choice of subjects is largely driven by aesthetics. While that’s not necessarily a bad thing, I feel there’s an opportunity to go deeper. Working on cohesive series with a clear narrative or concept is something I’ve been thinking about more and more. It’s a missing piece in my work that I plan to prioritize in 2025.
8. Financial Aspects
Financially, 2024 has been quiet. Aside from Medium, I haven’t earned anything from photography this year. While it would be incredible to turn this passion into a sustainable source of income, I also see the silver lining in not having financial pressure. It’s allowed me to focus on authentic growth, to explore freely without the constraints of commercial demands.
9. Strategy and Growth
One of my weak points this year has been a lack of strategic thinking. I’ve dedicated less time than I’d like to studying platforms, building a cohesive portfolio, and increasing my digital literacy. Instead, I’ve leaned heavily into experimentation and play, which has been fulfilling but not always structured. In 2025, I aim to strike a balance—continuing to explore creatively while also focusing on the less glamorous but essential aspects of growth.
10. Looking Ahead
As 2025 approaches, my love for photography is stronger than ever. Next year, I plan to take on more serious projects—participating in exhibitions, launching an online web shop, and creating photo series that tell compelling stories. These steps feel like the natural evolution of my journey and a way to share my passion with a larger audience.
Thank you for being part of my story so far. I look forward to many more moments of artistic joy and creation with you in the future.
