Exploring the Contrast Between Beauty and Decay: Captivating Photos of an Elegant Mannequin in a Forgotten Urban Wasteland
Walking down Ilica, the main street in Zagreb, I stumbled upon a courtyard filled with rubble and discarded old items. It was a place where traces of the past met the relentless wear of time. Among the mess, my attention was caught by an abandoned wooden mannequin. At first glance, it was stunningly feminine, even seductive—if that can be said about a mannequin.
Its elegance and refinement stood in sharp contrast to the rough, neglected surroundings—piles of dirt, rubble, and the crumbling facade of the building. This contrast was fascinating, almost poetic. The mannequin, which in another context might symbolize beauty and perfection, here looked like a lost witness to decay.
I immediately decided to capture this moment with my camera. The photoshoot was spontaneous, and through the lens, I tried to capture the tension between beauty and decay, between the temporary and the eternal. The mannequin felt like a metaphor—a symbol of something once cherished and valued, now lying discarded and forgotten.
The photos I took tell the story of this unusual scene and the captivating aesthetics of decay. I hope others can feel at least a fraction of what I experienced while capturing these images.
All the photographs were taken by the author using a Fujifilm X-E4 and a 27mm f/2.8 lens.
There may have been actual fashion photoshoots manufactured for this look at some point. 😆
How crazy and what an opportunity at the same time, Davor! I love the contrast on these images.
