The 80s in Focus: A Photographic Adventure
A nostalgic look at 80s architecture and culture, captured through vivid photography and retro aesthetics.
Why the 80s?
The 1980s are the decade I was born in, and naturally, they have shaped my interests and personality. What I love most about that era is the music—many of my favorite bands emerged back then, along with countless rock ballads and songs with prominent synthesizers that I adore. Besides the music, I also enjoy the retro vibe of the 80s—not out of nostalgia or a desire to turn back time, but because of the strong character those things had.
A Visit to the Zagreb Fair
I decided to capture the story of the 80s at the Zagreb Fair and share it here. The fair has a long history—it was first held in 1909 and moved to its current location south of the Sava River in 1956. Over the years, it became one of the biggest trade fairs in this part of Europe, a place where new cars, technology, and trends were introduced, offering a glimpse into the future. But more than anything, the fair symbolized an era of ambitious projects and progress.
Inspiration, Mood, and Photography
Its pavilions, built at different times, now form a mix of architectural styles. Some have a brutalist look, with massive concrete slabs and reliefs, while others reflect the experimental shapes and materials typical of the 80s. Today, with cracks in the walls, rusting metal structures, and empty spaces where crowds once gathered, the fair has a unique atmosphere—fascinating yet slightly melancholic.
📷 For these photos, I drew inspiration from William Eggleston, a pioneer of color photography known for his richly saturated tones and ability to turn everyday, mundane scenes into striking compositions.
And now, step into the past with me. Enjoy the photos!

Great pictures Davor, thanks for sharing. We have some big agricultural shows near us that have had permanent structures added to the location and these always strike me as rather melancholic on all but the few days of the year they are in use. They appear unloved and careworn until the arrival of banners and flags and, most importantly, people. These buildings are perhaps similar in that regard?
Wonderful photos, Davor. The colours are amazing!
